Energy savings potential for the commercial refrigeration sector.

High energy bills? It’s time to go inverter!

With the rapid increase in energy costs, food and commercial sectors desperately need energy-efficient solutions. Inverter technology offers improved energy savings with better load matching, fewer on-off cycles, soft start-ups, and fewer defrost cycles. This case study presents the energy savings potential of inverter condensing units.

Input data and assumptions

Based on actual data of the size and medium-temperature cooling capacity demand from three existing stores in Podlaskie province (Poland), appropriate condensing units were selected for each of them. Two cases were compared: the case where only on-off units operate in the store and the case where only inverter condensing units are used.

Having actual electricity consumption cost data for each store, it was assumed that 50% of this total energy consumption was used by the refrigeration system, according to the regular energy consumption share of a standard supermarket.

For each store, the monthly energy consumption cost has increased year to year (August 2022 vs. August 2021), and the monthly savings potential was calculated if an inverter condensing unit was used instead of several standard on-off condensing units.

Calculations and results

Energy savings for 120 m2 market

The medium-temperature cooling demand for this store is 7 kW. The study compares the annual energy  consumption of one ~7 kW iCOOLTM unit against similar capacity standard on-off unit available in the market. The iCOOLTM consumes 43% less energy than the standard on-off unit and provides significant monthly cost savings.

Energy savings for 300 m2 market

The medium-temperature cooling demand for this store is 15 kW. The study compares the annual energy  consumption using one ~15 kW iCOOLTM unit against three standard ~5 kW on-off units available in the market. The iCOOLTM consumes 37% less energy than the set of three standard on-off units and provides significant monthly cost savings.

Energy savings for 400 m2 market

The medium-temperature cooling demand for this store is 20 kW. The study compares the annual energy consumption of one ~20 kW iCOOLTM unit against four standard ~5 kW on-off units available in the market. The iCOOLTM consumes 29% less energy than the set of four standard on-off units and provides significant monthly cost savings.

Inverter vs. on-off solution – summary

The standard on-off condensing units work all the time with the same compressor speed and the same nominal capacity. Such units in each cycle consume the same amount of energy. The inverter condensing units always adapt the capacity and the energy consumption to the current demand of the installation.
